What does an in-home euthanasia look like with Dr. Brenna?

We offer in-home euthanasia and quality of life consultations in Olds, North Calgary, Cochrane, Bearspaw, Red Deer, Sylvan Lake, Trochu, Three Hills, Sundre, Didsbury, Penhold, Carstairs, Bowden, Innsifail & surrounding areas.

Prior to the appointment, we will send you a consent form to fill out and sign, along with an invoice for the services requested. We require payment in advance of the procedure. This allows you to be fully engaged with your pet during the appointment.

At the appointment, we will start by administering a small injection under your pets’ skin to provide sedation and relax them before proceeding to anything else. Sedation typically takes 5-25 minutes from the time the medication is administered. Sometimes we will split up the medications for sedation into two steps, with the first one containing a pain medication and the second one containing an anesthetic, once your pet is a bit more relaxed. As your pet gets sleepy, we would encourage you to love on them and feed them any treats they are willing to take.

The next step involves administering the euthanasia medications. Depending on your pet, we may use an injection into a vein or into an organ. Either way we will make a decision that is in the best interest of your pet. They will not be able to feel any pain during the procedure.

Following your pets passing, we will assist in making any fur clippings or ink prints you may wish to have as a keepsake. If you elect to bury your pet, we will provide you with instructions regarding local regulations. If cremation is elected, we will transport your pet to Gateway Pet Memorial service. If your pet is over 50 pounds, we kindly ask if anyone is available to help transfer them to the vehicle for aftercare at the end of the appointment.

Any friends/family members or other pets you wish to be present for the euthanasia are welcome, however this is ultimately your decision as their caregiver. You do not need to be present for the final injection if you do not wish to be. If you would like your pet euthanized outside of the home or in a different location, please indicate this on the euthanasia request form. We are unable to guarantee this but can certainly see what might work.

Quality of Life Scales

Quality of life scales can be done at home to help you determine if the time to say goodbye is drawing near. These are not meant to make any decision for you, only to help you look at your pet from multiple aspects that make their life whole.
